The National Virtual Epilepsy Institute, the latest born NVI of the IRCCS Network of Neurosciences and Neurorehabilitation, was established in the last quarter of 2022, with the participation of 24 IRCCS. The NVI for Epilepsy aims to address some of the most relevant and controversial aspects of epilepsy, such as Status Epilepticus, tumor-related epilepsy, autoimmune-associated epilepsies, neurosurgical treatment.
The founding element of the NVI for Epilepsy is the diffusion of shared procedures for a homogeneous collection of the minimum patient data set in order to create reliable databases. In Italy there are Centers of absolute excellence, extensively engaged in the clinical and research work on epilepsy; the network will therefore thoroughly address the selected topics, from the pre-clinical models to the diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms.
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder, rather than a disease, which recognizes different etiologies, age dependency, and comorbidities; there is a need for a multi-disciplinary and multi-specialist approach. The IVN for Epilepsy will work in close relationship with the other Virtual Institutes of the RIN Network.
